Never Let Me Go 3 (spoiler caution!)

I just finished Ch. 15. We get an idea of where Kathy is coming from now. A “carer” is a little clearer concept to us now. But she is a unique care, and for some reason she has been given an extension on her life. Whether it was because she was a good carer we don’t know. But she hints that being a good carer is probably not the entire reason for her long tenure as a carer. Will we find out that she is given a full life; will this be a happy ending? We already know she cared for Ruth, and so Ruth is dead. Now we find she cared for Tommy also. He is dead then. What is driving her now? What makes her want to remember everything now? She’s been given time to really think about her eventual death. It will be a slow and methodical killing by her society. She has seen first hand the murder/sacrifice of her two closest friends, Ruth and Tommy. Has she begun to question the morality of her eventual death?

The Hailsham reminiscences is an effective device for characterization. We see bit of Ruth’s past driving her behavior. We see how Tommy's has changed. And we are prompted to ask what really goes on at Hailsham? What was the gallery used for? Where DO the genes for these clones come from? If indeed they are correct in their assumption that they are clones. Many interesting questions that will hopefully be answered!
